Roland Space Echo RE-200

The lesser known member of the tape echo world.

This is the predecessor of the well-known RE-201 with the same functions.

The difference lies in the tape mechanism and the sound character.

For this tape echo they used the unpopular cartridge that contains the tape loop.

This mechanism is fragile, rewinding a new tape loop is a drama and the pinch roller has difficulty pulling the tape through the  cartridge, which can lead to hickups in the sound or speed fluctuations.

I solved this myself by not using a cartridge but a separate tape loop.

In addition to the fixed echo times, there is also a spring reverberation on board, but that is separate from the echo. This means that the echo is not in the reverberation as with a Dynacord. This can be solved with a modification.

I think the space echoes sound a little less dimensional than a Dynacord, but has character and the variable motor is of course great.

The tape mechanism and the heads are of quality, the DC motor is fragile and if it malfunctions, you are in costs. Fortunately echofix has them for sale in terms of revision models.

A standard in every studio by now but heavily overpriced at the moment I think.
